Thank you to everyone who participated in our PRO Act National Week of Action. We have one last action this week: Call your senators. Working people elected them because they gave us their word that passing the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act was a priority. It’s time for them to keep their promise.
Together, we’ve made thousands of calls and wrote thousands of letters. We told lawmakers loud and clear: Support working people. It’s working.
The House passed the PRO Act with bipartisan support.
On Workers Memorial Day, we remember those who have suffered and died on the job. We have lost and continue to lose too many working people to COVID-19 and other workplace hazards. No one should die simply because we go to work. Under the law, every employer is responsible for providing a safe workplace. But each year, thousands of people are killed and millions more get sick or are injured from preventable workplace hazards.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) provides up to six months of COBRA payments from April 1, 2021, through Sept. 30, 2021, for those who lost or will lose their employment-provided medical coverage between Nov. 1, 2019, and Sept. 30, 2021. This provision of the ARP can assist members who may have lost or may lose their jobs, even temporarily, and correspondingly lose their medical coverage. The following information may be of interest to your members.
To receive this benefit, you must meet the federal government’s eligibility criteria and must apply for the subsidized COBRA. You must enroll within 60 days from when you receive your updated COBRA notice or April 1, 2021, whichever is later.
Today, justice was partially served with the conviction of George Floyd's uniformed killer and is a first step toward racial justice and equality in this country. OPEIU expresses condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd, whose life was stolen from him by a police officer enabled by an unjust set of systems and institutions that will continue to claim the lives of our neighbors and loved ones -- until we put a stop to it.
The labor movement is a valuable ally in the multifaceted fight against racism in all of its forms, both in the workplace and in our communities. It's incumbent upon the trade union movement to agitate, educate and organize to eradicate the systems and structures that left George Floyd -- and countless others -- dead at the hands of those whose duty is to serve and protect. Another Black life claimed by police brutality is one too many.

The Oct. 31 deadline is fast approaching for public sector employees to apply for student loan relief through the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
More specifically, under the temporary waiver:
Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.
Unfortunately, union staff are not eligible for this program. Be sure to visit the OPEIU Membership Benefits page to learn about the OPEIU Student Debt Reduction Program and the educational scholarships available for OPEIU members and their families.
OPEIU Local 32, in collaboration with the other unions which comprise the Judiciary Council of Affiliated Unions, has reached a tentative agreement with the State of New Jersey for our court employees. Links here are for the summary of all the changes and the actual Memorandum of Agreement reached at the bargaining table. The 3-page summary is included for your convenience, but members will actually vote to accept or reject the complete MOA.
