New York, NY- The Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO, CLC Executive Board named Mary Mahoney to serve as Secretary-Treasurer, effective January 1, 2010, following the retirement of Nancy Wohlforth. The appointment was made at the Executive Board’s meeting in Miami, Florida in October 2009. Mahoney has served as a Vice President for Region II since 2001.

Haledon, New Jersey – The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark today announced that New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech will be honored at its 27th Annual Sol Stetin Awards Gala on November 19, 2009.
The OPEIU Executive Board has named Allen Byron to serve as Vice President for Region II on the Executive Board. Byron is Secretary-Treasurer/Business Manager of OPEIU Local 32 in Union, New Jersey. “Allen has been a dedicated union leader for many years, and his life’s mission has been to better the lives of working families in New Jersey,” said OPEIU President Michael Goodwin. “His experience working at Local 32, defending members and negotiating higher pay and benefits, makes him the perfect person to represent the members of Region II.”

The Oct. 31 deadline is fast approaching for public sector employees to apply for student loan relief through the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
More specifically, under the temporary waiver:
Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.
