New report by @EconomicPolicy

This new report by @EconomicPolicy illustrates exactly why we need strong pro-worker policies from the executive branch. @hcltech’s systematic illegal underpayment of migrant workers hurts all workers — and warrants a swift response by the @USDOL.

Tech Workers at Big Cartel Request Voluntary Recognition of Their Union

Salt Lake City, Utah (Dec. 1, 2021) -- Employees at the e-commerce company Big Cartel today requested from their employer voluntary recognition of their union with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local Union 1010.

A supermajority of workers at the e-commerce platform -- including product developers, engineers, designers, support, marketing and operations staff -- signed union authorization cards and have publicly signed onto a voluntary recognition letter delivered to Matt Wigham and Eric Turner, co-founders of the company.

In their letter requesting voluntary recognition, Big Cartel employees said "forming a union will promote transparency and collaboration, ensure equity, increase staff well-being and retention, and add to the long list of reasons we choose to work at Big Cartel."

Take Advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness Changes Before Oct. 31

Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

More specifically, under the temporary waiver:

  • Borrowers who have Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), Perkins loans or other federal student loans can consolidate their loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan and receive PSLF credit for periods of repayment prior to consolidation. Periods of repayment on parent PLUS loans are not eligible under the limited PSLF waiver. Before consolidating, borrowers should check to see if they work for a qualifying employer using the PSLF Help Tool.
  • Past periods of repayment will now count regardless of whether a borrower made a payment, or made that payment on time, for the full amount due, or on a qualifying repayment plan.

Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.

Unfortunately, union staff are not eligible for this program. Be sure to visit the OPEIU Membership Benefits page to learn about the OPEIU Student Debt Reduction Program and the educational scholarships available for OPEIU members and their families.

Union Coalition Files Unfair Practice Charge Against the State of New Jersey Judiciary Over COVID Policy (August 24. 2021)

Late last week, JCAU Council and CWA 1036 jointly filed an Unfair Labor Practice Charge as well as a petition for immediate restraints with the Public Employment Relations Commission to challenge the Judiciary’s recently announced vaccine and testing policy. While the immediate restraints were denied, the underlying ULP is moving forward.  The ULP is based on the near-immediate imposition of the policy without impact negotiations with the Unions. The Unfair Practice process is underway and procedural steps are scheduled over the next 2-3 weeks. We will keep members updated on any developments.

We urge our members to contact their US Senators in support of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, important pro-worker, pro-union legislation which has already passed the House of Representatives (H.R. 842), but needs to get through the Senate (S.420). You can call your Senators toll free at 866-832-1560 and tell them this bill is important to you.
