The Senate has passed a bill to provide relief to endangered multiemployer pensions, as part of President Bidens $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.
In addition to much needed relief to families and small businesses struggling during the pandemic, the bill provides relief for plans in which many OPEIU members participate, including the OPEIU Western States Plan, the Local 153 Plan and a number of others, affecting OPEIU members and retirees throughout the United States. The bill now goes back to the House for a final vote.
OPEIU members have been waiting for this type of legislation. We have been working with the AFL-CIO Retirement Committee for nearly two years to win this reform and secure our members' pensions.
Dear OPEIU Action Team Member:
On Friday night, the House of Representatives voted on a bill to provide relief to endangered multiemployer pensions, as part of President Bidens $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.
The bill provides relief for plans in which many OPEIU members participate, including the OPEIU Western States Plan, the Local 153 Plan and a number of others, affecting OPEIU members and retirees throughout the United States. The bill goes to the Senate this week.
For his entire career, OPEIU Representative Mike Davis has been fighting for the rights of health care professionals.
For the past two decades, he’s led the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association, and played a major role in creating the First National Guild for Health Care Providers of the Lower Extremity/OPEIU Guild 45. Guild 45 is the first professional union dedicated to protecting the rights of the nation’s podiatrists.
Now he’s asking for help.
The Oct. 31 deadline is fast approaching for public sector employees to apply for student loan relief through the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
More specifically, under the temporary waiver:
Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.
Unfortunately, union staff are not eligible for this program. Be sure to visit the OPEIU Membership Benefits page to learn about the OPEIU Student Debt Reduction Program and the educational scholarships available for OPEIU members and their families.
OPEIU Local 32, in collaboration with the other unions which comprise the Judiciary Council of Affiliated Unions, has reached a tentative agreement with the State of New Jersey for our court employees. Links here are for the summary of all the changes and the actual Memorandum of Agreement reached at the bargaining table. The 3-page summary is included for your convenience, but members will actually vote to accept or reject the complete MOA.
