Turning 65? OPEIU's New Medicare Advantage Plan May be Right for You

Register for an informational webinar Oct. 6 at 3 pm EDT

If you’re at or nearing 65, OPEIU has an exciting new option to help save you money and provide dependable health care benefits during your retirement.

OPEIU is pleased to now offer our Medicare-eligible union retirees comprehensive Medicare Advantage plans through a trusted national partner, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. These plans are available exclusively to retired OPEIU members and their spouses/partners and cannot be found or bought on the open Medicare market.

These plans offer enhanced services compared to the Individual Medicare market, brand name prescription drug benefits and gap (“donut hole”) coverage, nationwide access and value-added programs (like SilverSneakers® gym membership, telehealth, hearing and more).

To help you learn more about the program and decide if it’s right for you, OPEIU will be hosting an informational webinar on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. EDT. Representatives will explain the many features of the plan and answer your questions. Please register here:

When: Oct 6, 2021, 03:00 p.m. Eastern Time (U.S. and Canada)

Attention Nonprofit Employees: Public Service Loan Forgiveness Deadline is Oct. 31

The Oct. 31 deadline is fast approaching for public sector employees to apply for student loan relief through the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Take Advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness Changes Before Oct. 31

Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

More specifically, under the temporary waiver:

  • Borrowers who have Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), Perkins loans or other federal student loans can consolidate their loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan and receive PSLF credit for periods of repayment prior to consolidation. Periods of repayment on parent PLUS loans are not eligible under the limited PSLF waiver. Before consolidating, borrowers should check to see if they work for a qualifying employer using the PSLF Help Tool.
  • Past periods of repayment will now count regardless of whether a borrower made a payment, or made that payment on time, for the full amount due, or on a qualifying repayment plan.

Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.

Unfortunately, union staff are not eligible for this program. Be sure to visit the OPEIU Membership Benefits page to learn about the OPEIU Student Debt Reduction Program and the educational scholarships available for OPEIU members and their families.
